One of the most enduring quote from the movie, “Casablanca” has to be:Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds? Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir. Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much. [aloud] Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!
That’s the way I feel about the ‘revelation’ that our diplomats have told lies. No kidding. That’s about as shocking as hearing Willie Nelson is arrested for possession of pot. I believe lying is in their freakin’ job description. Diplomacy is the ability to keep the dog at bay while you are looking for a big stick to whack him in the head. If that means saying, ‘Good doggie, nice doggie’ to a snarling vicious hellhound, then that’s what you do.
Now certainly, the whole wikileak thing points out serious flaws in the security protocols of our government, but hearing about diplomats lying is hardly news.
